The Purpose of Pruning
Reading: John 15:1-8; Hebrews 12:5-11
Devotional: Pruning is not punishment—it's preparation for greater fruitfulness. When God begins cutting back areas of your life, He's not rejecting you; He's acknowledging you're on the right track. The branches that bear no fruit get removed, but those producing fruit get pruned for maximum yield. God sees potential you cannot see. Those "sucker branches"—relationships, habits, or pursuits that look fruitful but drain your resources—must go. The discomfort of pruning is temporary, but the increased harvest is eternal. God isn't trying to hurt you; He's positioning you to produce much fruit. Yield to His gardening process, trusting that what He cuts away was hindering your destiny.
Reflection: What "sucker branches" might God be trying to prune from your life? Are you resisting His process?
